New camera and lens (finally!)

After months of scouring the web, contacting various shops and websites and not finding hide nor hair of a 500mm f4 I finally spotted one for sale on birdforum. After pouncing on it as fast as humanly possible (and fighting the incompetence of Halifax's faster payment system) we found ourselves in possession of not only a Canon EF 500mm f/4.0 IS USM but also a Canon EOS 1Dmark4, 1.4x III extender and various bags and bits. All courtesy of a very nice chap, Phil (hampers). This is pretty much the complete birding set up we've dreamed of (and saved up for) for years.

Now we just need to get out and use it! Unfortunately work commitments, bad weather and a dearth of birds at this time of year have made it difficult to get out in the field and take good pictures. We do, however, have a good crop of garden birds to test the kit on. There is much yet to learn, particularly with the 1Dm4, but this is already a massive step up from our old kit and we can work in dim/wet conditions that would have previously been impossible.
